The Director leads ICFJ’s flagship program, the ICFJ Knight Fellowships. The Director reports to the Vice-President of Programs and supervises the Knight Program Manager and the Program Assistant who work on all ICFJ Knight Fellowships. The Director is responsible for overseeing all areas of the ICFJ Knight Fellowships program, leading projects designed to instill a culture of news innovation and improve people’s lives through cutting-edge journalism around the globe. The Director also advises ICFJ in designing programs focused on sustainability and business models.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Lead the development of innovative fellowships that align with the mission and goals of ICFJ and the ICFJ Knight Fellowships’ funders.
2. Oversee the development of innovative programs and strategies that help news organizations create new revenue streams and become financially stable. 
3. Organize regular contacts with Fellows to promote collaboration and to ensure they are meeting their objectives and are able to resolve any critical obstacles.
4. Facilitate relationships with partners for effective collaboration with Fellows.
5. Lead the recruitment, onboarding and continuing development of Fellows as successful project leaders through orientation, ongoing training and resource development.
6. Supervise the work of the Program Manager and the Program Assistant that supports all ICFJ Knight Fellowships.
7. Produce reports required by the Knight Foundation and other funders supporting the program.
8. Supervise the tracking of impact to effectively measure the success of each project through management of dedicated staff, the design of digital tracking solutions that work across the program and hiring and oversight of evaluators and program consultants.
9. Oversee efforts to bring ICFJ Knight Fellows’ innovations to U.S. newsrooms.
10. Ensure all Fellows and vendors are paid, and Fellowships-related budgets are managed, in accordance with ICFJ policy.
11. Oversee the Knight International Journalism Awards program.
12. Lead the creation and maintenance of systems, policies and procedures needed to produce an effective, cohesive and accountable program.
13. Oversee the program’s communications strategy to promote the Fellows as “thought leaders” in their fields and the impact of their work.

REQUIREMENT

• At least twelve years of experience in journalism, international development and/or project management.
• Bachelor’s degree in international development, journalism, management or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
• Excellent writing and communication skills (English).
• Expertise and experience in one or more of the following regions preferred: Eastern Europe, Latin America, South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
• Proven track record for effectively managing multi-million-dollar budgets.
• Proficiency in at least one major language from the regions where Fellows work, particularly Spanish.
• A passion for technology and problem solving.
• Demonstrated ability to lead in-office and remote teams, manage multiple simultaneous projects and communicate effectively with stakeholders, delivering consistent high-quality results.
• Significant experience monitoring and evaluating qualitative and quantitative program results
