2025 Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellowship for Young Africans (Fully Funded)

Deadline: September 6, 2024.

The African Leadership Institute (AFLI) is unique among leadership initiatives in that it focuses on building the capacity and capability of visionary and strategic leadership across the continent. Developing exceptional leaders representing all spheres of society, the Institute’s flagship programme is the prestigious Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellowship. Offering a multifaceted learning experience and run in partnership with Oxford University, it is awarded annually to 20-25 carefully chosen candidates, nominated from across Africa.

The ATLP is a multi-faceted leadership learning experience, whose focus is African leadership in a Global context. It is a 5-month part-time programme run in partnership with Oxford University’s Said Business School. The world class faculty and guest speakers are drawn from both Africa and outside, and the programme incorporates modules in Africa and at Oxford, reflecting the African/Global duality of the leadership that will be required of future African leaders.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA/NOMINATION

  1. Candidates for the Fellowship must be nominated by someone senior in their community or their organization.
  2. The nominator must motivate their nomination of the candidate on the official Nomination Form.  It should be noted there is intense competition for the Fellowship from amongst the most impressive young leaders on the continent.
  3. AFLI averages more than 300 nominations for the 17-22 Fellowships on offer.
  4. They do not accept direct applications without prior nomination.
  5. There is, however, age criteria that must be met for Tutu Fellowship candidates. In brief, between 30 and 40.  For the 2025 Tutu Fellowship Programme, a candidate must be older than 30 on 30 April 2025 and younger than 40 years on 30 April 2025.

BENEFITS

  1. The ATLP involves two nine-day workshops, the first in South Africa typically in April – see dates at Key Dates and Deadlines – while the second will be held at Oxford University and in London in September. Tasks are also assigned to be completed between the two workshops – with proper planning, these can be comfortably accomplished outside normal work hours.
  2. The candidate’s costs on the programme – accommodation, tuition, subsistence, etc. – will be covered by the Fellowship.
  3. At the end of the programme, successful participants will graduate as Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellows (“Tutu Fellows”) and will be admitted into the AFLI network where Fellows can interact, engage in dialogue on leadership and strategic issues, and organise meetings and civic engagements.
