2024 Solar Decathlon Africa Design Challenge

Calling all African innovators! Are you passionate about design, sustainability, and tackling real-world challenges? The Solar Decathlon Africa Design Challenge is your chance to showcase your talent, collaborate with like-minded peers, and help shape the future of Africa’s built environment.

  • Compete: Join interdisciplinary teams and create innovative, net-zero building designs that address Africa’s unique needs, from climate resilience to affordability and community wellbeing.
  • Learn: Delve into cutting-edge building science with expert guidance and online resources. Master skills in architecture, engineering, and more.
  • Network: Build lasting connections with industry professionals, faculty mentors, and fellow Decathletes from across Africa and beyond.


Design submissions are required to meet the following specifications:

  • The team must select a specific location or site in Africa, with an assessment of local
    characteristics including geography, geology, and planning and zoning considerations to
    provide context for the building design and its relationship to the surrounding community.
  • Projects must be substantially different from any submitted to DOE Solar Decathlon
    competitions in the past.
  • The design must comply with zero energy building requirements according to annual basis.
  • The design must comply with Division requirements.
  • The team must address criteria for all 10 Solar Decathlon Contests.
  • Teams should identify and adhere to applicable codes for the building’s expected jurisdiction
