2024 AREAi English Access Scholarship Program: call for Instructors

The English Access Scholarship Program (hereafter known as “Access Program” or “Access”) is a U.S. Department of State-sponsored program that is managed by the local U.S. Embassy/Consulate and implemented by the Aid for Rural Education Access Initiative (AREAi).

The access program is designed to expose participants to U.S. culture, global citizenship, and democratic values through English language scholarships, professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators, and programming for alumni.

Teaching focuses on critical thinking, student-centered and communicative approaches. Bright, underserved students, primarily aged 13 to 20, receive a foundation of English language, leadership, and professional skills, and exposure to U.S. culture and democratic values through a two-year, 360-hour program.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Preparing lessons, units and projects to complete learning and Program objectives.
  • Establishing and communicating clear objectives for lessons, units and projects.
  • Present lessons in a comprehensive manner and use visual/audio means to facilitate learning.
  • Create and distribute educational content (notes, summaries, assignments, etc.).
  • Adapting teaching methods and materials to meet the interests and learning styles of students.
  • Working with students one-on-one when they need extra help or attention.
  • Provide individualized instruction to each student by promoting interactive learning.
  • Creating, assigning and grading various assessments for students, including tests, quizzes, essays, group work and projects.
  • Track and evaluate students’ progress, grades and provide feedback.
  • Creating a safe, respectful and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Establishing and enforcing rules of behavior for students in the classroom.
  • Collaborate with other instructors, parents/guardians, and stakeholders and participate in regular meetings.
  • Plan and execute educational in-class and outdoor activities and events.
  • Observe and understand students’ behaviour and psyche and report suspicions of neglect, abuse, etc.
  • Encouraging students to explore learning opportunities and career paths.
  • Develop and enrich professional skills and knowledge by attending seminars, conferences, etc.

REQUIREMENTS

  • A degree in English Language or other related courses with a certificate in education.
  • At least 3 years of proven experience as a teacher working with this age group.
  • Knowledge of TESOL, 21st Century Skills and US culture and values would be an advantage.
  • Thorough knowledge of teaching best practices and legal educational guidelines partnered with a willingness to follow the Acess Program and AREAi’s policies and procedures.

  • Ability to develop lesson plans and successfully instruct students in theories, methods, and tasks.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others and clearly express complex ideas.
  • Proficient active listening skills to understand and adapt to students’ various learning needs.
  • Knowledge of appropriate learning psychology, TESOL methodology and strategies.
  • Good Technology skills to teach students and present creative lessons.
  • Leadership skills and patience for working with students within ages 13- 20.
  • Strong public speaking and oral presentation skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Creative and energetic.
  • Strong moral values and discipline
