2019 Earth Journalism Network Environmental Data Journalism workshop for Indonesian Journalists

In partnership with Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN), Resource Watch is coming to Jakarta to train journalists on how to use the Resource Watch platform, showcase tools and tips for data analysis, reveal best practices for working with open data and highlight the value of incorporating data into stories. Workshop participants will have the ability to apply for funding to produce data-driven narrative stories using the tools and data available on Resource Watch.

 

THE WORKSHOP

The workshop is an opportunity for journalists to get hands-on training on how to locate, analyze, understand and visualize data in their reporting. Participants will get a detailed tutorial on how to use the Resource Watch platform and will have the opportunity to interact with WRI experts on GIS analysis and environmental issues. They’ll also learn the ropes of data-driven storytelling from EJN.

  • The workshop will be held at the World Resource Institute’s Indonesia office in Jakarta, Indonesia, on August 26 and 27, 2019.
  • Selected participants will be provided with meals and a travel allowance during the course of the workshop.
  • Journalists from print, online media, radio and television are all encouraged to apply. Women journalists and young journalists are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Sessions will be held in English with simultaneous interpretation to/from Bahasa Indonesia.

 

ELIGIBILITY

  • Indonesian journalists based in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, or Bekasi.
  • To commit to attend all days of the workshop.
  • To have a record of reporting on scientific, environmental, natural resource management and/or infrastructural development topics.
  • Experience with data and data analysis is preferred but not required.
  • If you produce stories for your home media organizations as a result of your attendance at the workshop, be willing to post copies of them on Earth Journalism Network website, Ekuatorial website and the Resource Watch blog.
  • A letter from your editor or media outlet supporting your application (freelancers are welcome but must have a letter of support from a media organization that will publish or broadcast your stories).

  • You will have to submit your CV and two samples of stories or links to relevant reports, so please get them ready beforehand.
